Firefox -- updater?

Dear Software Forum,

Question: what do I do with a file called "updater" instead of Makefile?

The whole story: I just installed MEPIS (begat of Ubuntu, begat of Debian) and Firefox was version 1.5.0.1. When I went into Firefox, I got the typical "upgrade now!" message and clicked to download. It downloaded a -tar.gz for 1.5.0.7. I thought "great, this will be my first build." So I untarred it and instead of Makefile and company, I got a bunch of files called .so and one called updater. I tried

./updater

and it spit out a usage description that sounded like it was for something else

usage: updater child parent [parent-pid]

or something of the sort.

I tried synaptic and it only updated to 1.5.0.1.

What do I do with the stuff I have?

Thanks,
JOel

trashbird1240:

Did you try the auto-update function? If not, lauch Firefox and click on the help menu dropdown. Then click on "Check for Updates". Firefox should just find the update and install in the background without your intervention.

Give that a shot and let us know.

Good luck

It's greyed out -- I think Firefox thinks he's fully upgraded.

No, in order for Firefox's updater to work, the correct permissions must be used on the directories and files. If the files are in your home directory, you should be fine. I installed mine in the /opt directory, because that is how I like to do it. But I had to change the permissions for the updater to work.
