Firefox and gtk problems

Hiya,
This is the second time this exact problem happened to me, so I'm getting rather annoyed by it. I'll start off by stating the problem:

Whenever I run a GTK compiled in version of Firefox/Mozilla, and try to download ANYTHING firefox goes outright and freezes like a Floridian who's at the North Pole! It freezes and freezes hard, the only way to kill it is ofcourse >killall firefox-bin ... I try to run it from console, but I don't get any error messages that pertain to GTK or whatnot.

How the problem started this time
Date: 1 hour ago .... command used ">apt-get install vim-gtk" .... after I did that, firefox would work anymore

How I fixed the problem the last time:
Reinstalled Debian. (I run last weeks Debian Testing). With was what a friend told me to do (he has been using linux since before he was born I think ...) and he said that GTK is horrible to uninstall and that'll I'll have less trouble/problems if I just reinstall deb.

what caused it the first time:
>apt-get -u dist-upgrade
yeah ... honestly, thats all I did ... I REALLY don't understand GTK/firefox

What I tried:
-removing firefox
-removing as much of GTK as I could
-compiling GTK from source
-tried NON-GTK version or GTK1 version, and that works, but I don't want to use GTK or w/o gtk because it is horribly ugly. Lynx looks better!
-begging the computer
-changing GTK1 and GTK2 themes .... also tried removing them

Solution that I found so far:
-reinstall Debian

if anyone can help me in anyway, I'm be most gratefull to them,
Piotr

well, thanks for everyone who replied (hey, thanks me!)

I discovered something new: any file that isn't in the mailcap thingy caused firefox to crash .... wonder why this happens :-/ happens for root and my user.

o, just for kicks, I removed mime-support and firefox crashed on everydownload instead of just those which where in mime-support list or whatnot. Hope someone can help, if not I'm gonna reinstall linux again, and it this problem happens again, I'm going back to windows!
