Angry Failed to install AMD drivers, now X server will not start automatically (Kubuntu)

My OS is Kubuntu 23.10 and my video card is an AMD Radeon 6500XT.

The other day, I decided I wanted to use the official AMD drivers. I downloaded and ran the amdgpu-install for Ubuntu x86-64. Near the end of the installation, the build of amdgpu-dkms failed. At this point the computer still ran fine in all cases. However, the failed build was adding an inconvenience to package management as the failed build would happen over and over. I followed a solution and ran `sudo apt remove amdgpu-dkms`. Great! No more apt problems. However, that day I also ran my monthly updates and included was a new kernel.

The next day when I tried to boot, it just spat out a load of virtualbox index out of range errors. I had a TTY but the X server would not start. To stop virtualbox (which I believed was causing my errors), I removed virtualbox with apt. The next boot, no errors, but the X server did not start. Once again I had only a low-resolution TTY. When I run startx, everything works, but it is in 480p resolution.

The only console output on the TTY during boot was

SGX Disabled by BIOS

I am scared to run sudo apt remove amdgpu* because I fear it will break everything more.

How can I fix this? (Uninstall old drivers??)

This strted when you attempted to install the proprietary drivers. I would purge and clean away those drivers and reinstall the FOSS drivers for that card, just as a first cut.

Fro the record, this is where the book says I should tell you to restore from your backup if that fails. You DO have a backup, right?

Thank you!

(For those interested, the following commands worked)

The following are as root:

amdgpu-install --uninstall
rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-amdgpu.conf
