F7 Sound Server won't share

I have no idea why, but my ALSA just will not share!
If I am listening to music, that's the only sound that will ever come from my speakers. This is annoying because if I want to watch a movie clip, I actually have to exit Amarok to do so, before opening Xine.

Help? Ideas?

Are you running Gnome or KDE?
Assuming it's KDE (since you mentioned Amarok)...
I suppose you have the KDE sound system enabled?
Try running non-KDE applications via artsdsp:
Code:
artsdsp application

no, thanks for the help but I am indeed running Gnome; I just like Amarok, and am thus using ALSA (I think) but the non-sharing is very OSS-esque...
I'm not even really sure how to check.. Sound is one of my weak points with Linux

Gnome also has a sound server; it's called esd. I'm not sure how to set it up, though.

well.. I just don't know.. and now firefox won't make a sound period.. I know it did at one time.

I've tried
Code:
aoss firefox
and that doesnt work, I've made sure esd is running and alsad is not, I've made sure it's only esd running.. but the same problem..
I just don't know....

Incidentally this is Fedora 7.. if I forgot to mention.

incidentally, Xine reports
Code:
load_plugins: failed to load audio output plugin <alsa>
when it fails to capture the audio device (which is being hogged by Amarok)

Am I missing some key component of Alsa?
