Extremely Bizarre Problem - I have an antivirus program... that I never installed.

Here's the thing.

I never installed AVG. I know this for certain. It certainly is not in my applications list.

I have OpenSuse 11.4. Not many people install AVG on linux for obvious reasons, including myself.

Yet...

I have a process called 'avgupd' which executes at roughly 18:00 - 19:00 everyday. I only noticed this because it takes up 99% of my CPU and the fan is rather noisy.

There is also avgd and avgavid, which are classic examples of AVG processes.

So, I check my software manager and see I have avg85flx.

I am 100% sure I did not install this program.

I am also pretty damn sure it doesn't come with a normal install of OpenSuse 11.4.

What the hell is going on?

Dragged in as a dependency maybe? Are you absolutely sure it wasn't bundled in with the default install? I don't use SUSE, but given their relationship with M$ and that a virus scanner can be very useful on a Linux box in some circumstances I wouldn't be surprised if either were true.

I don't know. You might be right, it could have been installed under a dependency of some kind without me noticing.

Still, it's really freaked me out.

Can't check on 11.4, but can check on 11.3 and there is no sign of any avg program, neither installed nor available for installation (although it could be hiding away in some minor or unofficial repo that I don't have set up).

As far as I can see, it isn't available for 11.4, either.

What you can do, if you think that it might have pulled in as a dependency, is go into the Yast to the install/remove software section and see if anything depends on any of the AVG names that you have seen. I suspect that there won't be, but you should have a look. It would also be interesting to see what 'technical information' you can see on any of those programs, if any, and from which repo the programs have been supplied from, given that the software search doesn't show it up.

It is possible that the programs were not installed via the package manager, which will limit the amount of information that you'll get, but it is worth having a look.

Also, just for general info, it would be interesting to know whether you always use the package installer, whether that be Yast or Zypper, or whether you have been installing software from tarballs, etc.
