Extracting a RAR file...

I am not sure how to extract a RAR file in Linux. It's easy in Windows but I am not good with the commands...

Someone explain to me how to do this? I have downloaded WinRAR 3.70 BETA 1 or whatever the latest is. But I don't know how to use it!

EDIT: I am Using the lastest version of Ubuntu (forget version #)

So, you downloaded WinRAR? LOL.

You need this: unRAR

Then it's simply:
Code:
cd /path/to/file
unrar e file

First, you need the Linux version of the RAR archiver download that at http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm it's a command line only tool. Too install it, after extracting the install files, open a terminal windows, and change to the directory the files were extracted to (Example: cd /tmp/rar_install)
gain root user access with the su command and issue the command make

to extract the file

unrar e /(full path to archive)/(archive name)

That is a basic method, to see all option use the command:
unrar --help

And to create a rar archive:
rar --help

Hope that helps......

Killer

When you ask questions tell us what distro you are using and what versions (eg FC5 32bit).

You may also want to look at gpar2 for repairing rar archives.

Just install unrar, then you can extract a file exactly the windows way, by selecting the rar file, right-clicking and choosing "Extract here".

If you use GNOME Desktop
and install unrar
you can right click any rar file and extract here

just like in windows

In KDE
you can install Ark and unrar for the same effect
