Does anyone know how I can shorten the time it takes to detect the eth0 while booting up? I have a laptop which isn't connected so often, and it would be nice to not have to wait 5 min while the computer figures out that there's no ethernet connection available. I've checked thorugh all the init scripts and even the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. I'm using RedHat 7.1. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would have to guess that the dhcp client daemon is being called with a 5 minute timeout. Look in your network rc script wherever Redhat puts it and look for a line similar to this:

/sbin/dhcpcd -t 300

Change the 300 to something like 10.

If that does not solve your problem. Try to run the network init script from the command line with the shell debugging on: sh -x script_name. You will be able to tell where the command stalls.
