Error when running mplayer on Fedora Core 3

Well I recently installed Fedora Core 3 on a new machine recently built. I installed MPlayer to attempt to play video files and DVDs, and I can't get anything to play. I get the following error:

Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

Not sure what's up with it really and I'm not sure what else to say about it so I'll leave it there and answer questions if you have any. Thanks for any help you can provide.

well you didn't tell us any real information about your setup, but you're using the wrong vidoe output... use -vo help to list the available outputs. you might need to recompile it with X headers install if you compiled it yourself and there are no X outputs available

Try a differ video output device:

mplayer -vo help
will give a list of devices...

try:
mplayer -vo xv <file>
or
mplayer -vo sdl <file>
