Email mailing lists manager/viewer?

Mailing lists have always irritated me because you sign up for say, 5 and then your inbox is bedlum. Filtering helps, but then you have to click through to 5 folders.

If that wasn't enough without digest mode off it's hard to tell where message have come from. But with digest on it's hard to reply to a specific message.

Also, there doesn't seem to be any threading clear in my mail programs and webmail (I prefer webmail because I tend to want to view messages when I'm able to browse. So for the moment I have a seporate webmail account with whitelisting.

Then there's the option of viewing online - but then you forget to check it often enough and you might miss a reply.

So,

what program (or webmail) can do all this stuff for me?

- thread tracking
- reply highlighting
- generally making the whole experience feel like an online forum

Thanks for any recommendations, I got bored after page 3 of a freshmeat search
