ok, i MIGHT not have a link to my DVD druve in my dev drive. i can read dvd cd's and the files inside them, but i cant play them, meaning my dvd drive WILL read dvd's, but the player wont play them. does this mean i do have a link ?

how do i make a link to my dvd drive in the /dev directory ?

ln -s /dev/hdX /dev/dvd

you can still just use

mplayer -dvd 1 -dvd-device /dev/hdX

but it's obviously neater.... afaik all dvd applications use /dev/dvd as a suitable default.
