Dual booting question re: GoBack

I have a dual boot setup with Win 2K and the Suse 9.1 distro, installed on two different hard drives. It currently boots off the C: (dev/hda) drive.

With everone's help, I was able to get both my Win 2K and my Suse 9.1 booting off the hard drive(s) w/no conflicts.

It is NOT possible to have GoBack installed along with Grub (I tried) on the same drive. With Grub in first, when you try to add GB, you get a message saying that a program with the same "signature" as GB is installed, and that GB cannot be installed on this machine. This is with GB already installed, but de-activated.

To get my dual-boot/dual drive working I did the following:
*Repaired my Windoze MBR with Recovery Console - for details see my thread at:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...8&goto=newpost
*Booted from the Suse CD 1 to my existing Suse installation.
This option is buried 3 layers down in the install option - it should be in the first screen you see (sigh).
*Used YaST's boot config option to replace Grub on my C: (/dev/hda) MBR. Also checked drive boot order (hda/hdb) in the same config menu.

So it works - but I still WANT GoBack if at all possible. It is VERY useful for dealing with Windows problems.

I tried loading Grub on the same drive as my Suse install, and changing the boot order - but it didn't work - I kept booting back into Windoze, no matter how I set things.

Some clues:
When Linux went in, it seemed to add several partitions to my D: drive for its own use.

Drive setup now looks like this in Windoze:
Windoze boot = C: = /dev/hda = 6.4 gig (the whole drive)
CD player = D: = /dev/hdc = u know how big
Linux drive = E: = /dev/hdb = Linux install = 22.5GB used by Linux, PLUS a free space of 9.32GB that Windoze sees as writeable.

Under Linux the drives are:
hda1 = /windows/C = mounted
???? = /sys = not mounted = maybe hdb2?
hdb1 = /Windows/D = mounted
hdb3 = / = mounted

I've tried installing Grub different places and changing both the read order of the drives, and the BIOS boot order. Nothing I've done seems to give me the config I want - booting off the E: Windoze drive.

I want to boot off the second drive, (E: ), so I can (hopefully) put GoBack back on my C: Windoze drive.

Comments? Do I ask for too much here?
Thanks to all!

If you want to boot off of /dev/hdb, you'd have to have some weird BIOS. One thing you could do is physically swap the HD's. Then when you boot into XP, you can manually re-name the partitions and reorder them so XP sees its primary partition as C: instead of D: or E: But otherwise, I don't see how you could boot off of your current /dev/hdb. I can boot off of my /dev/hde, but that's only because I had to install a custom BIOS because of my IDE PCI bridge, which gives me the ability to have 8 IDE devices hooked up instead of 4 (Of which, I only use 5, there's only so much space in a Dell Demension, and only so many power cables.... And then there's the whole necessity thing, I have 2 80GB's and 1 40GB in there, I don't need more.)

So, yeah, this isn't a Linux question, this is more of a General question relating to changing your BIOS settings.

I've tried changing both my BIOS settings, and the Linux drive boot order. Didn't work. I've got the Award BIOS, which includes the option to set different drive boot orders. I'm using Win 2K, not XP if that makes any difference.

What BIOS are you using? Could I substitute it for my Award BIOS?
