Downloading Software To CD for Debian Etch? And Later For Upgrades?

I am just about to download Debian Etch to CD for my toying PC just here. Is there a proper way to do that to keep things on track?

The CD must be all blank otherwise?

Also, for software, can I download to CD only the programs I want to put in Debian 4.0? Where are the descriptions?

Does software slow it down?

Also lastly, later I think I will want to upgrade to Stable Debian Lenny, can that come by CD? My connection here is broadband, but the old PC is not connected, maybe later by dialup, or broadband.

And my local Australian mirror is best?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, a local (or close) mirror is always better to use.

You want to download the ISO images to your hard drive, then use your CD burning utility to burn the ISO to a blank CD. For each ISO, you'll need a different CD. Take the first one, put it in your old system, and boot from it.
