After setting up Ventrilo (on FC11) was having the script fail with "This account is currently not available" message. I'd setup the ventrilo user account with /sbin/nologin. Changing the login shell to /bin/bash has fixed this, but now ventrilo is showing in the user selection at bootup.
None of the other users I've created to run services need a shell - what obvious thing am I missing? Alternatively, if ventrilo's user account needs a login shell, is there a way to stop it from appearing at startup?
As a sidebar...when you setup a new user with /sbin/nologin, why does fedora still insist on a password?
Ventrilo does require a shell at least the last version of it I used (which has been a while).
What login manager are you using (gdm, xdm, etc)?
As to why fc requires a password, because /sbin/nologin is just another shell. It's nothing special (as far as fedora is concerned), it just has a return that keeps people from logging in.

Thanks.

I'm using GDM. Good idea: I'll go hit the docs to see how to stop the new user showing up.
