My dns is not working on my firewall. I can ping ip address like google or yahoo but I cannot get there by name. Ironically all of my other machines dns is working perfectly. They are all set to use is via dhcp or automatically. This preventing me from performing critical updates to my software firewall. What gives!
I am sorry, I am using SUSE 10 and have added statically the address of the DNS servers of my ISP and also have set the system up to do it automatically under the /etc/sysconfig/network/config or dhcp. I also have noticed a large delay when trying to ping a name like google.com from my other systems but the internet on those system work fine. What am I doing wrong?
So you are running an internal DNS server off your
firewall machine, and everyone is experiencing delays?
MY guess would be that your bind-configuration is screwed
up, and that the actual DNS on the outside is only being
accessed after some time-out on the internal net.
Does pinging via IP work instantaneously? E.g. one of those
three should be a good test object.
google.com has address 72.14.207.99
google.com has address 64.233.167.99
google.com has address 64.233.187.99
No I am not using bind everything is setup automatically or I set a static configuration under /etc/resolv.conf. Either way I get delays when pinging via ip to google.com or etc..
