djvu to pdf optimal conversion

I'm trying to convert a djvu to pdf (not that I actually need to do this, but at one point it may be useful).

I've found that I can use one of the following:

1) You can use djview4 (qt4 based) to export to pdf. Unfortunately this generates VERY VERY LARGE outputs, like 10 to 20 times the size of the djvu. For example I have a 12 MB djvu which goes up to a 235 MB (20x larger) pdf.

The options for this are limited and reducing dpi to around 100 gets the size down to 46 MB (4x larger), but then the text is barely readable.

2) You can use 'ddjvu' part of djvulibre.

Making a black and white output is quite efficient and high quality something like:

Code:
ddjvu -format=pdf -mode=black input.djvu output.pdf
This gets the size to 22 MB (2x larger), which is probably the best that can be done djvu -> pdf, assuming you have black and white text only.

Using the color mode however, has similar if not identical results to djview4. In fact the same results for black and white can be obtained by checking the bitonal option on djview4 export options. This suggests that djview4 uses ddjvu to do it's dirty work.

Anyone know of other ways to do this conversion or is the best that can be done ?

djvups + ps2pdf also results in a large output file.

bug report ? to say that the output is too big ?
