For the last couple of days, when I attempt to start a download with Video Download Helper a new, empty window opens with a header reading:

Moz-extension://frc0ee2a-3fa8-4b49-b107-cafdcfbf5e00 - Mozilla Firefox

Trying again today, for the first time the window was populated with a message saying:

"Companion Application Required" (screenshot attached)

and when I clicked on Continue I found myself on a Video Download Helper page that contained a surprising number of misspellings (screenshot attached)

Is this actually legitimate, or has someone perverted a very useful Add-On?

i apologize in advance for offering a workaround instead of a solution.
but consider this:
use the power of youtube-dl (which can download a lot more than just youtube videos, and also soundcloud and all sorts of media from the web)!

this is how i do it:

1. install the Open with... addon
2. add a new item for youtube-dl

optionally you can also add mpv media player, which can play online videos directly with the help of youtube-dl. i think mplayer also has that ability.

now, you can right-click any link and choose to open with youtube-dl.
by default it will download to your $HOME; a small wrapper script can help there.

i have several wrapper scripts, one for downloading music to dedicated directories, another one to download videos in medium resolution suitable for my netbook, etc. etc.

I have browsed around online enough to convince myself that the add-on for the Video DownloadHelper extension is genuine (although I still wish they had had someone proof-read their page) so I have accepted their update and I'm calling this one solved.

I am grateful to the previous respondent, for reminding me that there is usually more than one way to skin a cat!
