diary/food intake record solution.

Hi there,

For health reasons, I had to change my diet and need to monitor it closely to see how my body reacts to certain foods. Could you recommend an information keeping solution that would let me record the following on a daily basis:

- date
- food / ingredients
- comments
- rating/score

... and ideally being able to filter the entries based on key words or score.

Thank you

Wouldn't a spread sheet or a database serve for this purpose? You could google if you need something more specific although I don't see why, given your description. Data is data.

No, I don't - I have in the past looked for something similar, but, back then at least, I didn't find anything like I wanted - the stuff that I did find seemed mainly aimed at dieters in the sense of 'calorie counters', or something. On the other hand I do have a couple of links to offer that may be of tangential interest, as they concern nutrition:
http://www.soystache.com/foodtable.htm
http://efaeducation.nih.gov/sig/esstable.html

I had thought that I had bookmarked a more comprehensive US government database, but from what I remember, there is a US Govt database, but it wasn't directly useful without some specific application which isn't generally available (maybe Windows-only, or a ridiculous purchase price, or something). Maybe, if you can be more specific about your requirements, I can help further.

Thanks guys.
The links salasi provided may come in handy at a later stage. To provide more details, what I am trying to do is to single out foods that I'm kind of allergic to. I have been on a very strict diet for 1 week now and everything is fine. I want to start eating an increasingly wider range of foods now. I'd like to record daily what I've eaten. I'd also like to write a one-sentence comment each day and record any reactions. For example:

23/05/2013
Breakfast: oatsmeal, banana, apple, tea
Lunch: grilled salmon, potatoes, green beans, tea, oil, salt
Dinner: tea, something, something

Comments: didn't drink much water, spicy food

Reaction: none

If I react to some food, it'll usually be the following day so it's important for me to keep track of it. Also, I'd like to be able to search by keyword. For example: salmon

Eaten: 13/05/2013 salmon: 13/05: Reaction: none, 14/05: Reaction: none
Eaten: 21/05/2013 salmon: 21/05: Reaction: none, 22/05: Reaction: none

The more I think of it the more it looks like I'm going to do it myself (probably in Python) unless someone has already done it. I'd like it to be accessible from the internet (yet another reason to start learning Django).

I've seen a number of android apps but as mentioned above they are mostly for weight watchers.

Does anyone know of software that is similar. If not, I'll do it myself

Have you looked at " git hub "

It is being used for many more things than source code

I don't think anything exactly like that exists.

Some possibilities:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mslb/?source=directory

Thanks a lot. Much appreciated. I haven't thought of github. I know people have been using it for all sorts of things. I'll play with the two programs that TexMeX suggested.

What about paper and pencil or as as already stated a simple spread sheet.

Here's an interesting program that might help for this:

Thanks a lot. I've tried all the solutions suggested so far (including pen and paper) and so far I've found plain text files + github most convenient.

I know I'm late to this discussion, but you might try looking at materials designed to help diabetics track their meals. I fear that the pickings for native Linux stuff, unless you can find some spreadsheets that work in LO/OOo, will likely be pretty slim.

Someone very close to me has had diabetes since she was a teenager. Tracking food, especially carbohydrates, is a crucial aspect of daily life for her--daily insulin doses are affected by daily consumption of carbohydrates (much more than consumption of sugar, despite the popular image). A slice of bread is more significant than a packet of sugar.

Thanks for another suggestion. Although I am kind of happy with text files + github, I will give this one a try.
