device drivers

Linux Kernel Drivers
I was wondering why it that after new kernel install some device drivers won't work i.e I was upgrading from Ubuntu 9.0.4 to 9.1 which also meant new kernel upgrade I had parallels install. After upgrading parallels refused to work sighting current driver will not work with the new kernel . Surely people who develop kernel must know what a pain this is, why change kernel API for driver even in minor versions. I think same happens for Display drivers as well , some times after kernel upgrade I have to reinstall Nvidia drivers. If there is away around this it can save me a lot of trouble.
