DB for config instead of config files

I better start this question with an example. Most any service in Linux needs a config file . . . For instance, squid needs one called squid.conf. Well suppose I didn't want to keep configuration in the squid.conf file any longer, but rather, I wanted it to reside in a database (mysql for instance). Does anyone know of a way to make binaries for daemons look to a database for configuration information? I suspect I won't be getting any answers for this one, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway.

Thanks,
Pair

I don't know about replacing entire config files, after all you will need something to tell the program to look at the db.

You might find application specific configurations..
ie: bind, using mysql or ldap rather then config files.
