Customizing bash prompt: Don't show ~ for $home

Hi there,

I know that it's quite common to use the tilde ~ as a shorthand for the user's home directory. However, if you have the current working directory in the PS1 prompt, it is also abbreviated to the tilde if you're in your home direcory (or somewhere below).

I don't like that masquerade ball, and so I'd like to disable this replacement. I wouldn't mind if ~ is still recognized in a command, but I definitely don't want it to be displayed in the prompt. There I'd like to have the full, unabbreviated path.

How do I do that?
