Creating a Jabber account with Gaim

Because of MSN and Yahoos decision to block out 3rd party clients from their IM networks, I am trying Jabber, the userguide on the Jabber site (http://www.jabber.org/user/userguide/ar01s05.html) doesn't have instructions for regestering an account with Gaim but it looks as if it would be the same as with Gabber (which it does give instructions for) but when I try and connect with Giam I get this message: Error 401: Unauthorised.
Can anyone help me out?

by the way, I tried using Gabber to get an account but it won't work, I get this when I try and load it from the command line (I get nothing at all when I load it in a GUI)
[byron@terminator bin]$ ./gabber
./gabber: relocation error: /usr/lib/libgtkmm-1.2.so.0: undefined symbol: _ZTIN4SigC6ObjectE
If anyone can tell me how to fix that that would be good too
