crash -> blinking leds

Hi!

I'm using my SuSE 8.2. linux box as a server (dhcp, dns-server, samba file server) in a small local network. In general everything works very fine. But I am having troubles with random hangups of my machine.

I think the crashes are quite serious since the kernel doesn't even have time to print out any messages. The system just freezes and the caps and scroll locks leds start blinking. The average crash period is +- 3 days, but with a great variance (I just had two in a row...) I have the suspicion that the problem is linked to networking (downloading very large files over the samba connection seem to influence to crash rate....)

Could anyone maybe tell me where and how I can start looking for the cause of this (pretty annoying) trouble?

Any help would be appreciated,
>>MM

It sounds like a hardware problem to me... maybe damaged ram?

Hi,

I ran memtest from http://www.memtest86.com/ and found several errors... . One memory slot was responsible for that.

The machine is now up and running... hopefully for good!

Greetings and thanks,
