correct syntax for a canonical file?

Redhat 9.0 postfix mail server configured and working with just a few bugs to work out. I want to replace a user name 'marge' with 'marge.simpson' in outgoing emails using canonical mapping (this part doesn't work). I want returning mail to be processed and delivered to marge (this part works).

I found a thread by Wietse that says this is solved by canonically maping marge to marge.simpson and using an alias or virtual mapping for marge.simpson to marge.

Is my problem the canonical map?
My map is referenced in my main.cf file, inserted in the example canonical file, followed by postmap command and postfix restart. My map is in this format with each entry on its own line.

marge marge.simpson

Is this the correct syntax for a canonical file?
