copy to dual layer dvd

Using several different programs, including k3b and gnomebaker, to copy a dvd of about 8Gb, the copying from the source goes well but when it is ready to record, I get this error message:

READ DVD STRUCTURE #10h failed with SK=8h/ASC=ABh/ACQ=80h]: Input/output error

I feel as if I am back in Windows where only Microsoft engineers know what error messages mean. Can somebody translate this for me?

It has been a day without a response. Here is a very simple question. Has anyone been able to record a DVD-R DL?
