Converting DV input to MPG on the fly

I know I can take a DV file and run ffmpeg on it to make a DVD quality MPEG. What I want to know is, how can I suck the DV directly off the firewire into MPEG?

I tried using "dvgrab -" , which does grab the DV. But I cannot figure out how to get 'ffmpeg' do convert stdin to mpeg. Does anyone know how or have another way?

The ffmpeg program can grab DV directly, but it needs a patch.
