Thanks,

After enabling Q-fan control it was ok for 20 min.
It crashed again. Now I also optimised the cpu cooling for 'performace' not 'optimal' as it used to be.

I'll do some research (cpu, motherboard, bugs). AFAR, when I bought the new cpu I remember reading that it heats quite quickly.
What I'm also going to do is to install Debian Etch on this computer and compare the performance.

thanks

It turns out that Pentium D 820 and kernel 2.6.20-15-generic are a very unfortunate combination

1. there are big problems with pentium D 820 overheating. Lots of people complain about it. People recommend additional fans, getting a proper ATX 2.0 dual rail power supply (especially with PCI-E gfx card - which I have).

But:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s....20/+bug/94862

It perfectly fits the description. I'll keep digging... perhaps it's just the tip of the iceberg. lol

That launchpad bug thread you posted really tells a story of crummy news with that 2.6.15 kernel. Agreed, there are a lot of very similar reports as yours though I didn't pay much attention to the types of machines, but more to the kernel, and the ACPI issues.
I guess it's time to try a few other kernels and see what happens huh?
Keep us posted, prolly lots of folks will find this interesting too.

I've spent several hours today trying to compile the latest kernel 2.6.21-1. However, every time just in the middle of building a new kernel, the computer crashed or rebooted. Then I started it in CLI mode - still the same. I'll keep trying
