Complicated OpenGL games unstable

First, it might be nice if I describe my system:
AMD Athlon XP 3200, NVIDIA nForce2 motherboard chipset, 1 GB DDR RAM, NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 w/ 8X AGP 128MB, Linux 2.6.10

I've tried disabling AGP, tried NvAGP, tried disabling ACPI and APIC (kernel and lilo, respectively), disabling the framebuffer (lilo), and adding 'append = "mem=nopentium"' to /etc/lilo.conf as the README suggested. However, all have failed. I usually cannot play America's Army or the Doom3 demo for more than a few minutes without a segmentation fault. I've read about this, but as I said, APIC/ACPI doesn't seem to be at fault. Anybody know what else could be the problem or what else I should try? I'm almost tempted to see if ATI's cards/drivers (and there are open source drivers for ATI, right?) fare better. Thanks.

I'm not sure about your problem, but I'd first check overheating and RAM memories if I was you...

And stay away from ATI cards if you want to run games in Linux. Nvidia is the way to go. If you are going to game on Windows only, that's debatable, but on Linux... nvidia

I think you should recompile OpenGL with some parameter and should make sure some modules of your kernel support you chip.
That's it. but I don't know what exactly to do

I just have a hard time believing that this is a heat issue. Once upon a time, when I ran Windows on this machine, I didn't have any of these problems. Besides, if it were overheating, wouldn't it just freeze up the whole system, not seg fault an individual program? Also, I've tried recompiling the nvidia module, but nothing has been fixed. The instability seems to be directly proportional to the complexity. I get a crash maybe every half hour on BZFlag, but I get one every few minutes on AA or the Doom demo. My card is officially supported by the driver, so ...
