Thumbs up Complete Newbie

Hello Guys
I am a complete novice with fedora 6,i dual boot with xp while i learn a little of the complexities of linux with a view to ditching xp totally ( three cheers for me ),i am puzzled with the routine to install apps in fedora ,i have downloaded Rpm files but have no idea if they are (1) in the right place to be able to run,(2)or what to do once in the Terminal ,, i log on as su ,then i'm root ,tried "yum install + package name "but no joy, I can see that its going to be a slog but i think the rewards will be worth it,any help greatly appreciated
Regards Paul

Hey Paul! Welcome to LQ.

1) Regarding the rpms, if you download an rpm it doesn't really matter where you put it. For example, place them in /home/paul/rpms. Then, from the terminal type: rpm -i program.rpm. The '-i' is the install flag. Your program and associated library files will be installed in the correct place.

2) If you want to install the program through yum you will need to have your yum_files.repo set up correctly. On a fresh install they should be set up for the main repositories and if you will see when you need more alternative programs that you will need to add repositories to your yum files in /etc/yum.repo.d/. As root you can install programs using yum install program_name.

If you have any problems post the outputs that you get from your commands.

[root@localhost paulus]# rpm - i uudeview-0.5.20-9.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:

Hi Paulus,

I may be wrong but the syntax of the rpm command is:
rpm -i program_name

not

rpm - i program_name

(no space between '-' and 'i')

As to failed dependencies, it's better to install programs
through yum, because it will satisfy any dependencies (install
other files needed to run the program you want to install)

Can you post the content of your yum.conf (it's in /etc )

Sycamorex

I think that sycamorex has probably resolved your mplayer problem but just double check that you are running rpm -i mplayer.rpm from the same directory where mplayer.rpm is saved.
Alternatively run yum install mplayer (as root).

I don't know what kilbido is or if it is available through the repositories but try yum install klibido (or yum install KLibido ?)and this will resolve any dependencies. If it is not availble try yum install uudeview and then install klibido as before, using rpm, rpm -i klibido.rpm
