I downloaded a program called "AMSN" and it needed me to install another program inorder to be used: Tclhttp://tcl.sourceforge.net/. I downloaded the source files, and it asked me to compile it. The code to compile it is:
Code:
cd tcl8.4.9/unix
configure options
make
make test
make install
(http://www.tcl.tk/doc/howto/compile.html)
I'm totally lost when it comes to compiling...I've never done it; I know that the Terminal has to be open...but I don't know which one. (there is a Linux Terminal, Root Console Terminal, and a few others)
How can I compile the, or any, source code to create a program?
It's easy to compile a program. Open a terminal.
Type su
(enter your root password and hit enter. You won't see any *** stars or anything)
cd /to/the/directory/with/the/unpacked/source (for example /home/you/tcl8.4.9/unix)
type ./configure (hit enter)
type make (hit enter)
type make install (hit enter)
done.
Originally posted by BlackHatRob I recently downloaded the samba 3.0.x sources and did the following (as root)
Code:
cd /root/samba/sources
./configure
make
make install
but it didn't put any of the scripts in the correct places. for example /etc/init.d/smb did not exist, etc.
what did I do wrong?
I also tried
Code:
make installbin #the one that installs the scripts and whatnot
but it didn't install either.
The only way I could install it and get the scripts to be in the correct places was to download an RPM...
you can't just do a ./configure, make, and make install on everything. small apps you are ok doing this, but some things need to be done the right way. before installing something, look here for some tips:
