I am using the Epiphany browser in GNOME, and it forces me to hit the arrow key to navigate results that pop up under the search bar (unlike Firefox). I'd like to find a way to create a keyboard equivalent of the arrow keys, so I don't have to move my hand over to where the arrow keys are. I thought Alt+, for "up arrow" and Alt+. for "down arrow" might work. I've looked at GNOME's Keyboard tweak settings, but they need commands to execute and I haven't been able to figure out what the command equivalents would be.
would this not fall under software dependent? That being that you have to hook into the software to gain access to its controls in how it has the keyboard mapped to use whatever keys to do whatever within it.
point in case.
Window Maker Live, I had it installed, just for a few day here recently. and whenever I hit the ctrl arrow key to move my cursor in the terminal it would change desktops. very annoying. It was too customized to how they wanted it to be. not very well thought out really. menu didn't even update when I told it too by their setup means. nevertheless, the point being you're going to have to gain focus of the software then see if you can externally manipulate the keyboard.
all you need to do is find out what key words they GNOME uses to control the keyboard.
Have you tried using xmodmap? I use it to create a vim-style system. I've never replaced arrow keys with a combination (Alt + something) but I guess it is possible.
