Question chroot and run a pre existing Linux install from another one

Here is my setup. I have Debian Etch testing/unstable on a 320 gigabyte sata2 Seagate. I have Ubuntu 6.06 stable installed on a 120 gigabyte pata Seagate. Both each have a seperate / and /home partition except now I cannot remember if Ubuntu does, but please help me with that too because it will be good for everyone here to learn. I want to mount the Ubuntu partition on to a directory I create on the Etch desktop named a. That is easy. I can do that. Then I want to chroot it. After that I want to run it in a chrooted enviornment. The last part is tricky for me, and I don't know how to do it. Thanks for reading.

here is procedure, i use debian sarge and sid both togather (also gentoo under debian)

Code:
mkdir /ubuntu
$ mount /dev/hdx /ubuntu
$ mount -o bind /proc /ubuntu/proc
$ mount -o bind /dev  /ubuntu/dev
$ chroot /ubuntu /bin/bash
**replace /dev/hdx with ur ubuntu installed drive.
now edit ur /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to start GUI on tty8 or tty9
then simple run gdm
Code:
$ gdm
hope works
