Angry checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create

Hi,

I checked out the other posts with the similar problem.

I have SuSE linux kernel 2.4.something

gcc 3.3.1
autoconf 2.57

I am trying to compile HDF5-1.6.2 on linux and i would like the Fortran libraries as well.

I issue a ./configure in the main directory and the following is output:

./configure
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by HDF5 configure 1.6.2, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.53. Invocation command line was

$ ./configure

I don't know what that means or what I am supposed to do. Or am I way off base?

Pls help me

You're right on base. Why that "Linux" is there will be a mystery that even our ancesters will ponder over.

I'd edit the ./configure script at line 2041 and just take that "Linux" out. Hopefully there are no more. If there are, I don't know what to do.

If you want the Fortran wrapper library, you'll want to run ./configure as follows:

./configure --enable-fortran

I tried commenting out the Linux line.
that error disappeared, but i got a different error.
So i commented that code out and continued like that.

Eventually it ran ./configure "successfully"

I then did make

There were a whole bunch of errors, but they started off like:

make lib
make[1]: Entering directory `/a/users/fiorejm/hdf5-1.6.2'
make[2]: Entering directory `/a/users/fiorejm/hdf5-1.6.2/src'

In file included from H5.c:17:
H5private.h:346:5: #error "nothing appropriate for int16_t"

It seems to me like the gcc Linux problem is still affecting it.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I really dont know what to do.

I tried ./configure on other code (php4.3) and that worked fine.

So it seems as though it is hdf ./configure related.

Thanks for all your help in advance,

Justin

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant to just take out the "Linux", not comment the entire line.

Perhaps you should contact the authors about this problem. You likely aren't the only one having this problem.

Smile FIXED

Hey,
There wasn't "LINUX" on that line in configure.

It was a bunch of variables.

So i tried to trace it back to where it was defined, but that didn't help.

BUT, i did fix it.

I did the following:

In ./configure:

Before the CC variable is used the first time
CC="icc"

This overrode whereever it was picking up gcc from and used my intel c compiler.

in fortran/configure

before the F9X variable is used the first time
F9X=ifort

This made it use my intel fortran compiler instead of f90

CONFIGURE SUCCESS!

then i did 'make'

it made and errored out while compiling the tests.

I didn't really care so i did 'make install'

and that installed the library stuff.

Then I copied all that stuff to where i really wanted it to be.

I set up some symlinks and then it worked for me.

I got around the error by using my intel compilers instead of gcc and f90.

Hopefully this resolution will help some lost soles.

I also emailed HDF support.
I got their reply right after I worked out my solution.
Here is their response:

It looks like it cannot find the gcc compiler. If you type "gcc" from the command line, does it find it?
Thanks for all your help everyone.

can you suggest how to get out of this problem??

hey i am trying to complie the net-snmp source code in solaris platform using gcc......
but when i am trying to use the command ./configure
checking what to build and install... agent apps man local mibs
using default "enterprise.net-snmp"
using default enterprise sysOID "NET-SNMP-MIB::netSnmpAgentOIDs..."
using default notifications "NET-SNMP-MIB::netSnmpNotifications"
using OS default send buffer size for server sockets
using OS default recv buffer size for server sockets
using OS default send buffer size for client sockets
using OS default recv buffer size for client sockets
checking if I need to feed myself to ksh... no
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... cc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

and my config.log file looks something like this......
$ ./configure

See `config.log' for more details.
Looks like you dont have any compiler, open your Package Manager (usually at System->Administration->Package Manger

Then search for "gcc" string at search box (package manager's window top), and select "gcc - GNU compiler" then press the button "Install/Update"

This will install the gcc compiler

Hope this be helpfull
