In the past I have been able to burn CD's from linux. K3B gives me the error below but I have no idea what it means. Any clues would be very useful.
Thanks.

In my limited experience, that error usually means that the burner is mounted, so cdrecord can't get at it.
Enter mount, on its own, no parameters. It will give you a list of mounted devices. If dev/scd0 is there, well, just umount it. But I found that k3b can't copy too well. I do it in terminal. k3b reads an image in, but often can't write the image to disc.
Good Luck!!
Part of the problem is solved. The Sticky bit on cdrecord was not set. So this allows K3B to start. It then fails with a mkisofs error. I still need to investigate.
