xsane & parport prmissions

I found a this great post explaining how to get my canoscan fb630p scanner to work. I still have one (minor?) problem though.

If I execute xsane as root all goes well, but I get a warning telling me it isn't a very good idea to run this app as root (why?), but when I do it as a normal user it won't detect my scanner.

I added myself to the pl group the device belongsa to but that didn't help (not sure why not).

Then I did a 'chown linmix.linmix /dev/parport0' which got me going but now I ran into another problem. It detectis the scanner, but when I do a test scan I get an error message saying: 'failed to create file: permission denied'.

So I did 'chmod 666 /dev/parport0' just in case, but now xsane just hangs and hogs the memory untill I do a force quit.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,

linmix

I know I got this going, but I forgot to write down hw, and I'm doing a (forced) fresh install. Can anyone give me any ideas?
