cannot repair yum.conf (won't install new file)

Hi there,

I'm using FC4. After adding several repos to yum.conf and playing around for the first time with NOT using up2date, yum suddenly began failing, saying it could not access yum.conf. I searched LQ and found someone who had a similar problem. The suggested fix was to remove yum.conf and install a new one from fedorafaq.org. I followed the 'rm' and 'wget' commands but when attempting to install I get an error:

file /etc/yum.repos.d/freshrpms.repo from install of yum-fedorafaq-4-2005.07.25a conflicts with file from package freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc

I gather that means I've installed a package already that is incompatible with the new yum.conf file.

Can anyone help me to get yum up and running again?

Thanx in advance,
Krystal.

remove the package freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc then retry the rpm -Uvh

You could always visit the webpage and download the file first ... then install it. Or try the -f option (not recommended).

Awesome! That's exactly the next thing I was going to whinge about! Installing mplayer.
The best part of my Linux experience so far has been that people are so helpful.
Cheers.

At least the process is transparent.
I remember having issues with a windows box, taking it to the retailer for assistance, and waiting months until I started making noises about lost revenue (i.e. civil damages possible...). Fi-nally get it back and all they actually did was reinstall windows to the default state ... no information nothing.

Note - it is possible to install mplayer via yum ... but the source install is better and more reliable. MPlayer hq explains why.

One thing you will want to do is
yum install yumex

... which gives you a gui for yum that works like synaptic does for apt-get and better than the gui for up2date.

Technically, totem is better than mplayer at some things - just not out of the box. But you need to install all the totem stuff that dosn't come with... like totem-xine and mpeg and mp3 support.

(Totem has two main advantages over mplayer (imo) a. it has visualisations for playing music and b. it supports dvd menues. However - MPlayer is awesome.)

If you have broadband - do yum update.

A fun titbit - yum install frotz (read the man page - all the way to the bottom.)

If this was useful - click "thanks" and fill out the form. No cash required, do leave a comment.
