How to install ndiswrapper? I've only just installed mandrake 10 so I have no idea what I'm doing, just where I want to be. That would be with a working wireless card.
Anyway, how do I get to root? I don't know if this is the right way but I do it in the Configuration you computer, System, Console. Otherwise I can't get access to root.

I have just downloaded ndiswrapper 0.8, red the INSTALL file, gone to root, typed in "make install" and I get:

make: *** No rule to make target "install". Stop.

Can someone explain to me whats going on please? Thanks,

When installing from source you usually have to run:

$ ./configure
$ make
# make install

I think you forgot the first two steps.

Take note of the full path to your ndiswrapper install files.

Rather than using su (super user) from the command line to get root access,

The better option is to log in as root. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and tap the F1 key
Log in as root with the appropiate password.
cd /full-path-to/ndiswrapper
make (go put the kettle on for coffee)
make install

To return to the GUI (This Graphic User Interface) Ctrl-Alt F7

Before long you will be an expert at typing:
./configure
make
make install

Once you get to where you are going Have Fun and remember,
If it's not broken, Don't Fix it.

ndiswrapper is a tad unusual in that you don't need to run ./configure or make. A simple make install should do the trick. If you are getting that error message either you have a bad download or you are not in the ndiswrapper directory when you issue the command.

By the way, Mandrake 10 comes with ndiswrapper 0.4 already installed. If you intend to upgrade, you need to remove the 0.,4 version following the instructions on the ndiswrapper FAQ and be sure that you have installed your kernel source code.

If you want to use the 0.4 version, I would download the 0.4 tarball , extract it and follow the instructions in the INSTALL file starting AFTER the make install bit.

Ok, this is starting to make sense to me!
Couple of questions though, hehe, where is the kernal source files? Are they on the CDs? And are he help files on their as well? Cause I tryed to read them last night and it said that they weren't installed As far as I know I did the install properlly. Thanks for all your help so far guys!!

Since the kernel source files take up a fair amount of disk space, most distros don't install them by default (I'll spare you my rant on this subject). You should be able to find the source rpm either on your Mandrake disks (if you have a full set) or at the Mandrake website. I think the naming convention is something like kernelversion_source.rpm. If you get the source code from the Mandrake site, be sure to get the one that matches your running kernel. Type uname -a in a console if you don't know what kernel version you are running.
