I'm using Linux Mint 7 which is Ubuntu 8.10. I purchased a Linux Video Tutorial program on eBay which to my surprise is supposed to be run in Windows. Would be great if I could use it to follow along in Linux. Is there any program that'll allow me to do that? Thanks.
Wine allows you to run some windows programs in linux, but be careful. Viruses that windows is susceptible to are also capable of causing problems on linux.
viruses won't do anything if they've been launched by wine, which is an unknown platform for them, so you won't be infected... Actually it depends by the virus type, and how it was written... If you get infected by some kind of stupid virus, just remove .wine dir and everything will finish soon.

If you give wine access to your file system through one of the mounted disks, then potentially viruses do have access to your system beyond the wine directory. This may not be a threat for other reasons, like the viruses won't recognize the platform or something else. But there is potential for unwanted system access utilizing wine.
