Can't upgrade to KDE 3.5, packages seriously foobar'd

I recently tried to upgrade to KDE 3.5 via the instructions here. (official instructions for my distro) After updated my sources.list and adding the gpg key I attempted to upgrade via synaptic. I received the following error:

Code:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/kdm_4%3a3.5.0-0ubuntu0breezy1_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
I was going to upload my sources.list but so many packages are broken due to this that I can't even run most KDE apps now. At any rate, I don't see how that could be causing the problem.

Edit: Fixed the link to the instructions I followed.

OK, so I tried removing kdm from the apt cache to force a redownload, that didn't help. I thought I'd try removing KDM (and thus the kubuntu-desktop that depends on it) but received the following error:

E: kdm: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should

That's it. It says 'you should' and stops. It won't remove it or upgrade it or anything. I'm feeling quite frustrated as I JUST got everything set up how I want.

Removing the new repository and attempting a reinstall of the kdm package results in the same error.

The package KDE base is also now mysteriously missing, though that I was unable to reinstall. When Synaptic encountered the error with KDM (about halfway through the install process) it just stooped, does that mean any package set to be installed after kdm got dropped and is now gone? Is there, perhaps, a log I could look through? I suppose I'll try to find out.

Rebooted into recovery mode and ran apt-get upgrade, install went smoothly and everything now appears to be working. I guess maybe KDE can't update while it's running? Odd though, I've never had that issue with any Linux package, even the kernel.
