Can't play more than one sound at a time

When one sound is playing (e.g. music in XMMS), no other programs can play sounds (e.g. the sound that plays when a contact signs in on Gaim). Is there a way that I can have multiple sounds playing like on windows, or is this something that I just have to live with on linux?

I'm running FC3 with an on-board realtek sound card if that helps.

Hi,

you need sound server or you can configure your Alsa drivers for using DMIX plugin (see http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DMixPlugin).

You can also search LinuxQuestions forum.

like Vookimedlo said, you need a sound server. If you're running OSS, go for esd; if you're running alsa, go for jackd or esd;
