Can't play cds

Hi, i am using Gnome 2 under Redhat 9, and am using OSS. MP3s play fine, but whenever i try playing a cd it says its playing but i can't hear anything. There is no cable link between and my cd player because i couldn't find the cable. I can access all the files on the cd, just can't play them.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Well helloyo you will need that cd audio cable to hear sound from your cdrom.

Yeah, i tried finding that, but i still cant. i know dma would be best, but for some reason before i installed redhat again i could play cds...

? so you can play CDs now? pramod was talking about a little cable that directly connects your CDROM drive and your sound card...

yeah, im having the same problem....and i think it needs another plugin for the program because all i get is the bass from my music....and i can only hear it cuz my comp has a subwoofer

cuz i had the same problem with xmms but i just messed with the plugins til i got the best sound but with redhat 9's cd player i don't see where you can do that

Remember to unmute everything and turn up the vol on all of the controls just in case.

If you are usign ALSA then run alsamixer and tune everything there.

you did hook up an audio cable from the drive to the audio on the board/soundcard as suggested - right?

Is it plugged in the right place and have you tried a known good cable?

xmms can play cd without the audible cable.

I don't understand how xmms can play a music cd if the cd-rom drive does not have an audio cable attached to it.

That happened to me and I just get the cd-read plug-in for XMMS and it reads the audio Cd's as and play them like if you were playing a wav file so you don't need to have the cable connected to your sound card for xmms to play your cds.

o-kay! that's a new one.

SO I guess he's trying to do the same with DVD's then - play them without an audio cable.

would be a whole lot easier getting a cable from an old pc or extra drive or something.

I don't have an audio cable attached to my soundcard.
The sound goes via the IDE cable.
How else can you create mp3/ogg files which are digital ?
Then you couldn't rip audio at 4x or any speed above 1x., right ?
It is not needed to attach an audiocable to your soundcard.
