Can't disable mplayer-plugin

I have the mplayer plugin installed to watch movies within firefox (goes without saying). I really only use this program for quicktime movies because mplayer on it's own doesn't play them very well.

Under the firefox preferences in "Downloads" there's a button called plugins which I used to click and disable any types of movies I didn't want the mplayer plugin to work with. That way the movie would download and automatically play with mplayer rather then playing in the browser.

A little while ago I formatted and reinstalled everything. Now when I go to plugins it doesn't show the mplayer extension for the different file types. I don't really care for mplayer because it often will stop without playing the full movie. I find the first time it plays it will stop about two thirds through but then will play fine the second time I play it.

I'm using Gentoo linux (kernel 2.6.12, Gnome Desktop). I appreciate anything that will help. thanks

Sounds like the mplayer plug-in (note, not an extension) is not installed. goto 'about:plugins' to check if it is installed.

If not, you must install it, then disable it :)

First of all, I have to apolagize for misusing the word "extension" instead of plugin.

Second of all, if it wasn't installed then I wouldn't have to worry about disabling it because THERE WOULD BE NOTHING TO DISABLE.

Now, with that out of the way. For clarification the mplayer plugin does show up and does work. I just don't want it to work for certain file types. Does anyone else have a suggestion?
