Ok, next issue. Sigh.
I want to have xhost +localhost set. AFAIK this doesn't survive a logout/login cycle, so I added this line to ~/.xsession. xhost +localhost
According to this site: http://pangea.stanford.edu/computing...entication.php adding xhost to .xsession seems to be a normal thing to do.
In /etc/X11/Xsession.options, allow-user-xsession is set.
When I logout and login, I am kept in the login loop. That is, after I enter my password, I am taken back again to the login screen.
This is the (full) contents of .xsession-errors: Xsession: X session started for jlinkels at Tue Mar 27 16:04:54 GMT 2012
localhost being added to access control list
The .xsession file is executable as per the Xsession.options man page. To be sure, I chmod-ded the .xsession to 0700 and changed ownership to jlinkels:jlinkels. Which is me when I log in. To no avail.
Is this a bug, or is there some undocumented feature such as I have to stick my tongue into my left ear while logging in?
WHEN you have an ~/.xsession file, the last line should be startkde. Sure. Quite logical. Well documented as well.
jlinkels
not really. This should start the x session manager, that can be startkde, or you can start gnome, or any other software.
The session related files will depend on the session manager software, so hard to say what should be installed.

And therefor the X documentation suffices telling that additional command can be put in ~/.xsession? Period?
Really, if the documentation would have stated: "the last line in the .xsession file must start your window manager, e.g. gnome" I would have been able to figure out that I should substitute that for startkde.
