Calc alternative

I use OpenOffice.org Calc as a simple gradebook (i.e. A,B,C). However, on my computer it is terribly slow, to the point where it is difficult to even input data. Example: I want to type 25, but it comes out 52. Do you know any light alternative or software for keeping track of student grades?

Are you using Gnome?
Have you tried Gnumeric. It's integrated with Gnome and should definitely be more light-weight.

If you'd like a flexible CLI solution for basic spreadsheet. It'd be emacs' org-mode.
I use it for basic finance management (spreadsheet).
