Building glib-2.34.3 - libffi requirement not met

I'm on openSUSE 12.1, downloaded glib-2.34.3. I run
./configure --prefix=/usr

Everything is fine until:

checking for LIBFFI... no
configure: error: Package requirements (libffi >= 3.0.0) were not met:

No package 'libffi' found

Looking in /usr/lib, I see a version 4 of libffi exists:

erin@linux-z8zp:~/gtk-install/glib-2.34.3> ls -l /usr/lib/*libffi*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Apr 4 17:07 /usr/lib/libffi.so -> libffi.so.4.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Jul 16 2012 /usr/lib/libffi.so.4 -> libffi.so.4.0.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 26176 Oct 28 2011 /usr/lib/libffi.so.4.0.1

(I added the first link, but it doesn't help.)

Any ideas? Frustrated in that this is the first step in building GTK+.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

You probably need to install the libffi development package (libffi-dev on Debian, I don't know the exact name on openSUSE.)
