building from source and installing to a specified directory

is there a way, when building from source, to install the application to a specific directory? for example, typing 'make', and then 'install /usr/share'. would that install the application to '/usr/share'??

To install to a specific directory use:

./configure --prefix=/usr/share
make
make install
