BTTV + Kernel questions

Does any one know what options i need to be sure to enable in the kernel to get my bt878 based tv tuner card to work. Obviously i know that i need to enable v4l and bt848 support and also something about I2C support. I have tried it many ways already 2 many to list. My card is a "Hauppauge WinTV dbx stereo and fm radio". Sorry if this should have been in hardware. I have kernel source from kernel.org and its version 2.4.21. My distro if it matters is slackware9
Thanks

i use make menuconfig, so i can only say what i have set there.

i2c support:

<m> i2c support
<m> i2c bit-banging interfaces

multimedia devices:

<m> video for linux

and that's all that's needed (no bt-stuff in the kernel)

after compiling the kernel and booting with it,
get the bttv sources from here.

extract the tarball, run ./MAKEDEV, do a make install.
then, do depmod -a, and modprobe bttv.

you should now be all set to run your tv apps.

good luck and let me know if it works.

I was refering to the fact that in the kernel source that i have (2.4.21) it already has the source for bttv but for some reason it does not compile correctly. When i run "make dep bzImage modules modules_install" with the bt848 option selected it stops compiling with a bunch of errors and junk about unresolved symbols.

Any ways i like your idea about just compiling the kernel with the support it needs and then adding bttv module later on. I will try it right now.
Thanks for your response.

Ok this is a stupid question for some one to ask who has been working with different *nixs for a wile but i am sick of searching forums, google and books for this.
When i am at /usr/src/linux/arch and i need to go back to /usr/src/linux i do not want to type in "cd /usr/src/linux" so what should i do. It gets really anoying when i am like 10 directories deep and need to go back only one dir.
Thanks
