Question Broadband connection monitor

Lately, I've been having an issue with my broadband connection (AT&T). It drops for a few hours, comes back briefly, then drops again. This has been happening at least once every other day. I'm confident that the issue is not with my LAN and not with the modem they provided me. It looks like the server or router on their end is not providing or maintaining a conneciton with the modem. Now, I just need to gather info. to present to them.

What I'm looking for is a tool which can monitor the connection 24/7 and log the drops. A friend of mine mentioned the existence of "Network SLA Tools" that are available, but couldn't give me any more details at the time.

Any suggestions? My system specs are below. The modem that I'm using is a Toshiba PCX1100 (non-USB).

Thanks in advance.

The connections drop outs should be reflected in the /var/log/messages

neo77777,

Thanks for the reply!

I checked in /var/log/messages and looked for entries during a known "down" time. I didn't see anything network related - only "-- MARK --" entries.

A tech came out today and he actually had a clue regarding the system. He was saying that the signal coming into the modem is "borderline" strong enough. Any sort of fluctuation in the signal strength could cause the modem to drop the connection. He swapped out my splitter for a "better" one at the main box out back and gave me another one to use if the problem arises. The second splitter is set up to pull signal strength from the cable tv portion and add it to the portion going to the modem. We'll see.

Still lookin' for monitoring tools/suggestions if anyone has them.

Thanks.
