Bootsplash agains a vanilla 2.6.6 kernel?

I tried applying the bootsplash patch to a 2.6.6 vanilla kernel. I could not build the kernel, in part because 5 of the hunks in the patch failed. Has anyone here been successful at applying such a patch to a recent 2.6 kernel? If so how?

Searching for information on this, I found a rather long thread at the Gentoo forums, I haven't read it (completely) yet, but so far I haven't seen any 2.6 refference there. I'll post back if I get any info on this.
