Bootdisk?

Hi to all,

my friend of mine gave me an IBM netfinity 3500 (PII 128mb),

problem is i cant boot my linux CD, i tried the fedora 3,suse 9.3,suse live, linspire live. but it wont boot from CDROM. I already make it as a first device to boot. but still it bypass the cdrom just a blink of green light, but instead it boot from floopy drive, i tried to remove the connection of the floopy drive and nothigs happen. I tried to install also MS windows 2k and it wont boot from the CDROM also , so what I did is to install the windows using the DOS and locate the .exe file of the windows to install.

I want to install the linux, is there anyways to install linux using bootdisk?
also how can I do this?

thanks

sorry for my english

You can go here:

ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/su.../current/boot/

and get these files:

bootdsk1
bootdsk2
bootdsk3

and then follow the directions in the README file in the same directory.

From there you should be able to enter SuSE's installation program which will allow you to install SuSE off of your CDROM.

Should that fail, you can attempt a FTP install instead.

P.S. Your English is just fine

Another solution could be the Smart Boot Manager. It's a single floppy that in many cases will allow you to boot from a cdrom.

The BIOS must be set to autodetect your cdrom. In case there is any other settings your cdrom will not be recognized properly at boot-time

Under DOS, write bootdsk1, bootdsk2 and bootdsk3 to formatted (i.e.,
error-free) 1.44MB-floppies using CD1:/dosutils/rawrite/rawrite.exe. For
Windows systems, there is CD1:/dosutils/rawwritewin/rawwritewin.exe.

Sorry , i cant understand this, i thought i just copy the files on the Floopy disk..

thanks

I'd bet nope... most times, you can not simply write these to floppy, these are *images* of a floppy, including all the stuff you never see.

the rawwrite you mentioned should be the tool you need.

lol,

Hello! You will find a directory called "dosutils" in any Fedora or RedHat Installation CD. Use the rawrite.exe to create a bootable floppy. Next, boot from the floppy. it will show you a graphical screen with several options such as rescue etc. Look for install (or Graaphical install) option. Most probably it will be just "enter". This will start anaconda, the RedHat Linux / Fedora Core system installer. It will then ask you for a location of the installation files. Insert the cd and select Cdrom--> /dev/cdrom. It will start the install using the CD.
