boot partition

Hi, I'm new to linux and I installed Fedora Core 3 yesterday. It worked fine until i tried to install WindowsXP on another partition. The winsows installation removed the grub boot-manager, and the installation failed; so now i can only boot on the partition with the failed windows install ("disc error").
I tried to reinstall grub with the fc3 cd, but says that "no kernel packages were installed".
I don't care about the windows installation, but how do i get linux to work?

Hi,
From another newbie dealing also dealing with boot probs at mom (I'm trying to brom from a USB2 HDD using a notebook with Debian - no success so far...).
As you say, winXP just took you bootloader out and failled, not so stange, and that one of the reasons you should instal it first.
I don't know your distribution, but with Mandrake (9.2 and 10.0, at least) if you run the installation again, as an update/upgrade you keep you definitions and end up with the bootloader in place again (only tryied with Lilo, but must be the same)

If I run the installation again and choose upgrade, it asks if I want to change the boot loader. I say yes, and thats why the "no kernel packages were installed" error comes.

Now i've booted knoppix to try instaling lilo, but it gives me this:
cp: cannot create regular file '/boot/diag1.img': Read-only file system
